Rock On, Andy

Andrew (Andy) Makey, 44, died unexpectedly on Friday July 12, 2024. Andy came to Ironwood from his home state of Iowa in the spring of 2015. He immediately injected himself into the Northwoods music scene – hosting Open Mics, playing acoustic gigs, as well as countless collaborations with area musicians and bands. He took great joy and care in working with all performers, regardless of their level of experience. His encouraging presence provided a vehicle for other musicians to find their own growth and confidence. Andy’s passion for theatre and community naturally led him to the Historic Ironwood Theatre.

Our HIT family is so grateful for the many ways in which Andy was involved here. Whether mixing sound for live bands, moving a grand piano, or acting as a stagehand, Andy’s contributions were many and vital. He regularly made himself available as a “grunt” for the theatre, bringing a welcome boost of energy to the team. He was always on board for special events and benefit concerts. During the 15-month Covid-19 blackout, Andy lent his talents to HIT’s “Ten-Minute Tuesdays” virtual performances.

Andy illuminated any stage he walked onto. Whether solo or with a group, he commanded audience attention with his engaging, yet warm and open stage presence. His incredibly powerful voice was special to encounter, a gift which will be long-remembered and revered. He was a showman of the first order.

We know Andy has found his place in the Heavenly Choir and is already leading a rousing “Amazing Grace.” Farewell, Andy. Our deepest sympathies to his family, and our gratitude for sharing him with us while he was here.
